SOLVER Scanning Probe Microscope

The short description of a new closed gas-liquid cell design

Liquid cell provides possibility to investigate solid-liquid interface in AFM modes. Liquid cell is useful for AFM studies of hydrophilic surfaces to avoid large capillary forces by total dipping the cantilever inside liquid and it becomes indispensable in the case of some objects like living cell which will be damaged in air environment.

The design of our liquid cell eliminates the usual liquid cell problems dueto bubble entrapment and fluid leakage.
Our liquid cell has the cylindrical form made from fluoroplastic and titanium. This admit wide range of liquids from water and organic solvents to some acids and alkalis.

It is possible to supply the liquid cell with heating and liquid temperature control feature. The diod detector located in 2 mm from the measuring point to guarantee the low temperature gradient and high accuracy of liquid temperature control.

From the upper side it has the glass window for laser beam adjustment.
Under glass - cantilever at the distance ~2mm.

Liquid cell specification:

Depth - 5mm
Internal diameter - 16mm
External diameter - 22mm
Material of cell - fluoroplastic

Samples size:

Diameter - max 9mm
Thickness - max 3,5 mm (with special biological substrate - 0.8 mm)

The liquid cell has 2 stainless tubes - 2 fluoroplastic tubes:

  1. for filling the empty cell and for liquid input while working
  2. for ejecting the bubbles of air during filling and for liquid output while working.

Our liquid cell highlights:

  1. Fully hermetic design eliminates any fluid leakage.
  2. Bubbles free.
  3. The possibility to insert reagents while working procedure.
  4. The cell is designed so that the speed of scanning in liquid stays practically the same as in air.
  5. The liquid heating and temperature control.
